International speaker highlights

Top international experts will share the latest developments in the renewable energy field at the ISES Solar World Congress 2009 in Johannesburg. South Africa from 11 – 14 October 2009. Plenary speakers lined up for this event include the who’s who among renewable energy expertise around the world. These discussions will not be without controversy and will certainly provide lively debate.

Speakers include:

•    Hermann Scheer, chair of the World Council for Renewable Energy and president of Eurosolar, is regarded by many as the father of energy feed-in tariffs. He also founded and is the Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) which has established its headquarters in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City.
•    World-renowned Harry Lehmann will give the latest on 100% renewable energies.
•    Hartmut Grassl will share his expertise on climate change.
•    Alexandros Tombazis will discuss the latest global trends in green architecture.
•    Distinguished Yogi Goswami will present the Farrington Daniels award lecture.
•    Richard Worthington will give a talk on renewable energy policy in South Africa.
•    Controversial South African, Prof Vivian Alberts, who will discuss his reasons for moving his thin solar panel enterprise to Germany.
•    Prof Eike Weber of Fraunhofer Solar Energy Institute in Freiburg will address grid pricing parity for concentrating PV.
•    ISES President, Dr Monica Oliphant will open the congress. Oliphant, an expert on energy efficiency, has made important inputs to public hearings in South Africa on the renewable energy feed-in tariff.

Focus on the youth

Since the future belongs to renewable energies, the ISES SWC2009 Programme Committee has decided to highlight youth. A special Young-ISES meeting as well as the Young-SESSA (Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa) founding meeting has been scheduled. In addition, a multi-day side-event will be offered to schoolchildren.
