Planting Seeds of Education
In the small voluntary market, individuals, companies, or governments purchase carbon offsets to mitigate their own greenhouse gas emissions. For example, an individual might purchase carbon offsets to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions caused by personal air travel. Note the word “purchase” which means that a monetary transaction is intended to take place, but how much of that money ends up in the offset project?
The Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA) will be launching its YOUNG SESSA division at the ISES (International Solar Energy Society) Solar World Congress 2009 to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 11 – 14 October. SESSA, which has been in existence since 1974, has expanded its focus from the corporate and individual sectors to include our younger population, which ranges from school children to students at tertiary education institutions., , ,The aims of Young SESSA are to engage with students and high school scholars that are involved in projects or studies in sustainable energy, such as environmental studies, renewable energy technology, and environmental law.
The society will also be launching its own SESSA GREEN CERTIFICATE which will allow individuals, companies, or governments to make a contribution in multiples of R500, which will be ring-fenced for YOUNG SESSA. Your purchase of a GREEN CERTIFICATE for R500 (and you will be encouraged to buy more than one) will contribute to the annual membership fees to the YOUNG SESSA division and to ISES based in Germany. The balance will be used to provide bursaries to students in the field of sustainable energy.
School children and students can submit application forms for membership of the YOUNG SESSA Division. Bursaries will be allocated after careful evaluation of candidates.
SESSA’s targets for this project are:-
- 500 members of Young SESSA by the end of 2010
- R200,000 sustainable annual bursary fund growing each year
- 10 graduating students in the first year, growing to as many as the bursary fund will sustain
The future of our world rests in the hands of the young and we must encourage them to join the sustainable way of life. Rather than plant a tree, support SESSA, which will be PLANTING SEEDS OF EDUCATION, and thus contributing human capital to a sustainable future.
